# Tailwind KOMpass: find Strava segments with a tailwind near you

> Live wind on every Strava segment, scored for effective tailwind. Time your effort and get alerts when conditions turn favorable, so you can chase PRs, KOMs and QOMs with the wind at your back.

Tailwind KOMpass is a web app for cyclists. It overlays real-time and forecast wind on an interactive map of Strava segments, scores each segment for tailwind alignment, estimates the power and wind you need to beat a record, and alerts you when the forecast wind on your watched segments is favorable.

Free to use · 7-day Pro trial when you arm your first alert · No credit card

## How it works

1. **Find segments with the wind behind them.** The map colours each Strava segment by its signed effective tailwind: the wind component along the direction of travel, positive for tailwind and negative for headwind (`signed = wind speed × cos(wind towards − segment bearing)`).
2. **Use the KOM finder.** Filter segments near you by distance, length, record speed, popularity, surface and how close your own best time is to the KOM or QOM.
3. **Watch segments.** Add segments to a watchlist. The dashboard tells you, per segment, what the wind means for you, for example "≈ 19 s faster than your PR" or "puts you at KOM pace".
4. **Analyse power and pacing.** From your FTP, weight and the segment's elevation profile, get your estimated time, the power the record needs, the tailwind that would close the gap, and a section-by-section pacing plan.
5. **Get alerted.** When the forecast tailwind on a watched segment clears your threshold, you get a Web Push notification (or an email as fallback).

## Use it from an AI assistant

Tailwind KOMpass is also an MCP server, so Claude and other assistants that support MCP connectors can answer wind questions with the same numbers the app shows. In Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste a URL.

- **No sign-in:** `https://api.tailwindkompass.com/functions/v1/mcp`. Tools: `find_tailwind_segments` (the best tailwind segments near a place in the next 3 days) and `get_segment` (the wind on one Strava segment now and its best window).
- **Signed in with Strava:** `https://api.tailwindkompass.com/functions/v1/mcp/rider`. Adds your own watchlist, the tailwind windows on your segments, watching and unwatching segments, and your alert threshold. You can disconnect it any time in Settings.

## Pricing

- **Free:** segment map, 3-hour forecast, unlimited watchlist with current-conditions alerts, KOM finder (radius mode), full analysis on 3 segments a month, unlimited GPX/FIT exports.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is this compliant with Strava's Terms of Service?**
Yes. Tailwind KOMpass uses official Strava API endpoints and follows Strava's guidelines. It never posts on your behalf or accesses private data without permission.

**How accurate is the wind data?**
Wind data comes from global weather services and is refreshed through the day. The effective-tailwind figure projects the wind onto the segment bearing, so it accounts for both wind speed and direction.

**Which regions are supported?**
Wind data is global. Segment coverage grows as athletes ride segments, and you can pull in any segment by searching its name or ID on the Segments page.

**How is my data protected?**
OAuth authentication; Strava tokens never reach your browser or any third party. You can export or delete all your data from Settings.
